Which platform should I build my website on?Wordpress vs. Wix vs. SquareSpace

If you have a company, you need a website.

There are many options for launching your site – and each one comes with its own challenges and benefits.

If you’re looking to launch a website quickly and efficiently, Wix and SquareSpace are two popular, easy-to-use options. Wordpress is a bit more complex, but is versatile and great for growing companies who can afford dedicating resources to it.

Different companies have different needs, and there’s not really a one-size-fits-all solution to choosing a platform. I’ve designed websites in Wix, SquareSpace, and Wordpress, and each one has its own benefits and drawbacks.

What platform should you build your website on? While I can’t give you a definitive answer without all the details, here’s what I’ve learned in my experience across three popular platforms.

You should build your site in Wordpress if…

-       Your internal team can handle it. If you have or are willing to hire a developer, you can handle a Wordpress website. If you have a dedicated sales or marketing employee, that’s another good sign you probably should be using Wordpress or a similar, more robust CMS (content management system!).

-       If your website is highly complex. If your site NEEDS to have highly customizable features in order to function, you may need a robust CMS like Wordpress. If you have a complex online store, something like Wordpress is probably necessary, too.

-       If you’re expecting high traffic, and plan to utilize highly intricate marketing and sales funnels. If you’re building out a thousand paged site that needs to be able to operate smoothly with lots and lots of traffic, Wordpress may be the right option for you. Wordpress integrates with an essentially limitless amount of plugins for all of your sales and marketing needs – like integrating SalesForce or HubSpot for a CRM, Yoast for SEO, etc.

You should build your site in Wix if…

-       If you’re a beginner who’s creating a website on your own. One of the best parts of Wix is just how easy it is: it’s a true drag and drop interface with zero custom code required. With a little bit of tinkering or a good YouTube video on your side, you can relatively easily get a Wix site put together in just a few hours.

-       If your website only has a handful of static pages. If you’re looking for a site that only has the basics – an about page, a contact page, and that’s about it – then Wix may be the site for you. It’s also great for someone putting together a quick portfolio or resume site.

You should build your website in SquareSpace if…

-       If you have a moderate amount of website resources. If your website will have a handful of resources (like maybe a blog, a few whitepapers, but not anything crazy or overly intricate), SquareSpace will likely work well for you. It’s also great for someone just starting out with an online store.

-       If you’ve got a background in basic website design, or are willing to learn a few things. If you know some CSS/HTML (and maybe a tiny bit of JavaScript), you’ll be prepared to put together a SquareSpace site that doesn’t look “too generic” or straight out of the box. Hiring a SquareSpace designer is also a good approach here – all you really need within SquareSpace is someone to set you up. Once you’ve got good bones and branding, you’ll be off to the races.
